Lord Shiva – the greatest Vaishnava

Om Vishnupad 108 Tridandi Swami Sri Srimat Bhakti Sravan Tirtha Goswami Maharaj ki Jai !!

Wherever Lord Krishna is there Lord Shiva also dwells and wherever Mahadev Shambhu is there Sri Hari also dwells.

The loving bond between Sri Krishna and Sri Shiva proves the Lord’s words that “My devotees are always absorbed in thinking about me and I am always absorbed in thinking about them.”

In the Brihad Bhagawatamrita, Lord Brahma says to Devrishi Narada, “O Narada, I have never seen anyone more dear to the Lord than Shiva. Shivaji is constantly absorbed in the nectarean mellows emenating from Lord Krishna.

In the Chaitanya Charitamrita, it is written:

Krishna-preme unmatta, vihvala digambara
nirantara kahe shiva “murli krishna dasa”

Immersed in the love of Krishna, an agitated Shiva constantly chants ‘I am Krishna’s servant.’

Lord Shiva is the embodiment of supreme detachment. He smears his body with ashes and wears a garland of bones. A deadly cobra encircles his neck and his matted hair flails wildly as he dances his tandava nritya with joyful abandon.

Lord Shiva carries the sacred Ganga, which emenates from the toe of Lord Vishnu, on his head in his thickly matted hair. Mahadeva Shiva is universally worshipped as the greatest devotee of Sri Krishna, Vaishnavaanaam yatha shumbuh (Srimad Bhagavatam 12.13.16).

When Lord Krishna appeared in Gokula, Lord Shiva could not contain himself. Dressed as a sadhu, He went to Gokula and stood at the door of Nanda Baba’s house asking to see the new-born. Both mother Yasoda and Rohini eyed the wild looking sadhu suspiciously and felt that his appearance would frighten their little Kanha. They refused to let Him see the baby.

Lord Shiva tried in many ways to get them to change their mind and when they didn’t allow him He was crushed. Lord Krishna knew that His devotee, His dear Sadashiv was eager to have His darshan. So right at that moment, He started crying very fiercely and loudly. Yasoda mata tried her best to pacify Him, but to no avail. Then finally, thinking that the sadhu baba might atleast distract the child, she brought Him to the courtyard and let Lord Shiva see the divine child. Both Bhakta and Bhagwan were happy to have darshan of each other and immediately baby Krishna stopped crying.

Lord Shiva is usually an integral part of Lord Krishna’s leelas. Easily pleased and hence called Ashutosh, Lord Shiva generally ends up giving some belligerent rakshasa a boon that causes Lord Krishna to appear. But Lord Shiva is very clever. He appears to give a boon, but it is actually a punishment. Lord Shiva has two types of mercy, sakapat kripa (mercy with cheating) and nishkapat kripa (mercy without duplicity). To the danavas and rakshasas who always pray for power, strength, invincibility, weapons and material opulance, He gives sakapat kripa.

When He granted the wishes of danavas like Ravana and Vrikaasura, Lord Mahadeva gave sakapat kripa. Those who are innimical to Lord Vishnu but worship Lord Shiva, always get the Lord’s sakapat kripa. Similarly, those Vaishnavas who ignore Lord Shiva’s pre-eminent position and worship Lord Vishnu, are deluded all to easily by the Lord’s maya.

In Brihad Bhagavatamrita, Lord Brahma says to Narada Rishi “One should not differentiate between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu or Krishna. Krishna may forgive one who commits offences at His own lotus feet. But He never forgives one who commits offences at the lotus feet of Lord Shiva. Shiva is Vaishnava agraganya, the greatest Vaishnava.

To devotees of Lord Hari, He awards nishkapat kripa. Every devotee of Lord Krishna has to pass the quality test of Lord Shiva before Lord Krishna accepts them.

A visit to the Braja Mandala region needs Lord Shiva’s permission. In Mathura Lord Shiva’s temples surround the town in all the four corners. There are 4 Shiva lingas located in the four corners to protect the city. These lingas are called the dik-pala of Mathura. These lingas are called Gokarnesvara Mahadeva in the north, Pippalesvara Mahadeva in the east, Rangesvara Mahadeva in the south and Bhutesvara Mahadeva in the west.

Indeed the whole of Braja mandala abounds in temples of Lord Shiva; Chakleshwar Mahadeva near Govardhan, Nandishwar Mahadeva in Nandgaon, Gopeshwar Mahadev and Bankhandi Mahadev in Vrindavan, Kundeshwar Mahadev in Radha Kund, Kedareshwar Mahadev, the Kedarnath temple located in a remote corner in the Braj mandala parikrama marg, Kameshwar Mahadev and many others.

In the Brahma-vaivarta purana, Lord Shiva spoke to the demigods, the devas, about the glories of chanting Sri Krishna’s names:

adhunaa pancha-vaktrena yan naama-guna-kirtanam
gaayan bhramaami sarvatra nishprhah sarva karmasu

With my five faces I chant His name and qualities while I wander everywhere without involving myself in anything

matto yaati ca mrtyush cha yan naama-guna-kirtanam
shaasvaj japantam tan naama drshtavaa mrtyuh palaayate

Because I constantly chant His name and qualities, death does not touch me. Death runs away from that person who chants his name.

sarva brahmaanda samhartaapy aham krtyunjayaabhidhah
schiram tapasaa yasya guna-naamaanu-kirtanaat

By reciting His name and qualities while performing my austerities for a long time, I have achieved the power to destroy all the universes and have conquered even death.

Sadhakas in the raganuga marg pray to Lord Gopeshwar Mahadeva to bless them with gopi rupa and gopi bhava and permit them to enter into the Lord’s maharaas.

Gopeshwar Mahadev ki Jai

Jai Jai Sri Radhey !!

Jai Guru !!

RUDRAM CHAMKAM YAGYA

“Srusti Sthilaya Yasya lila Eva mahesituh
Tam Vande Saccidanandam Sarva shubhanivruttaye ||”

“Oh! Lord, the creator, protector and destroyer of the universe, the very form of truth, consciousness, and bliss I bow to you. Let all the inauspicious things be driven away from me and your devotee be protected.”

The Shri Rudram Chamkam is a Vedic stotra dedicated to Rudra, an earlier aspect of Shiva Chamkam assures granting of what we ask. The creator makes no distinction between the things of the world and the other world. Both belong to him and desire born out of Virtue is really manifestation of divinity and Dharma.

Chamkam furnishes completely the ideal of human happiness and defines in the highest degree the desires and do not delimit to be asked or to be granted. Sri Rudram-Chamkam occupies a very important place in Vedic literature and in the practice of Vedic Religion. It is the heart of Krishna Yajurveda and is treasured in the center of Taittiriya Samhita Strictly speaking, the Rudra is a Homa or sacrifice performed in fire in honour of God Rudra. While most of the rituals relating to the other Gods stop limited to the particular purpose intended in the Karma Kanda, it was felt that the Rudram could not and should not be so confined, but put to further varied uses. Hence we find that Rudram and Chamkam are used invariably for all the Vedic worship of Shiva in all the households and temples. The Rudram is addressed to worship Lord Shiva, who is said to give to the devotee who seeks His Grace anything that is asked for.

The Chamkam occurs in the 4th Kanda, 7th Prapataka of the Yajur Veda. The rudra is mostly chanted during Homa and avishekam. A pooja is performed with the chanting of the rudra mantra 1000 times is known as maha rudra,it’ s done on special occasions like Maha shivaratri or Shravan Somvar. Therefore, this yagna should be performed in a perfect way and with good intention and a fruitful result will be followed. Yagna does not only mean performing Pooja, it means purifying oneself from within.

A person who wants immediate relief from health problem, those who are childless or those facing problems in getting married or those facing financial crisis or if those having some wish to be fulfilled with in a short span of time can perform this yagna. Also, it is good to perform this yagna on auspicious days like birthdays and marriage anniversaries because this yagna acts as a shield of protection through out the year from all soughts of negativities.

Oam Namah Shivay

Shiva 5 Syllable Mantra

Om Namah Shivay

“Shiva Panchakshari Mantra” (Shiva’s 5 Syllable Mantra). This is Shiva’s simplest, and yet most effective mantra till date. Starting off with basics, the word by word, literal Meaning of Shiva’s 5 Syllable Mantra is

Om.. = ..Om..

Namah = I Bow

Shivaya = to Shiva

Hence,

Om Na-mah Shi-va-ya = Om I Bow to Shiva

(Actually Panch-akshari Mantra is only “Na-mah Shi-va-ya” ,Om is added for special purpose, which is dealt in later half of this writing)

Purpose of this Mantra:

Now bowing is done to someone who is Great… someone who is helping you, doing good for you by his magnanimity of heart or capable of helping you.

If you take him as a master, then he is the Master of the Masters, and you accost him with an intention to receive knowledge and wisdom, and the receiver always has to be in an attitude of gratitude right.

If you take him as god, then he is the God of the Gods, you accost him with an intention to fulfill some wish.

The one worshiped by masters and gods of this world and the others in 14 universes, hence even greatest of words said to describe his greatness, actually fall short by far and almost sound like an insult to him. So obviously we hail to such supreme stature who grants us material (wishes) as well as spiritual boons (higher consciousness, knowledge and peace).

Origin of this Mantra:

If one tries to track the Origin, then there are various divided beliefs and opinions regarding the Origin on this Great Mantra..

The Vedanta’s Believe Words by Brahma as in Vedas, are first Origin of everything,

The firs epigraphical writing as evidence is said to be found in “Rudra Adhyaya” of “Yajur-veda” where a Anuvaak (sanhita ke adhyay ka up vibhag = first part of paragraph) starts with “Namah shivaya”.

If you read Viniyog (Mantra Declaration) as in Mantra Shastra, then Vamdeva himself is the Rishi (Seer) of this mantra.

Some say, Lord Siva Himself was the guru of the Saivite saint Manickavachagar. He taught Manickavachagar the ‘Na-mah Shi-va-ya’ mantra, and he forwarded this to rest of mankind.

While A principle of Tantra studies indicates, that when Shiva wanted to create universe, then he took his Damru in his hand and started playing it, from the sound of that instrument all the vibration and strings were born, shakti (energy) was produced, which later took various forms of subtle and solid in nature. (This is the theory which I work on, that’s why Mantra science says universe is actually “Mantra-may” = made of mantra, because everything is nothing but Vibrations, energy)

Mantra Shastra is in itself a complete science of sounds, that’s why one needs to chant “Om Namah Shivaya” instead of “I bow to Shiva”, because its not just meaning, but the specific sound pattern created by combining specific syllables that matters, hence by repeated chanting it produces a distinct effect. Knowing exactly why only these syllables make the right combination would require in depth understanding, actually mastery of each and every syllable and sound, the 36 Tatva Table can help, so for the enthusiasts, that’s the way to go, but this work of developing Mantras, is better left to Rishis (Seers) and Gods.

Deeper of Meanings of this Mantra:

The literal meaning of this Mantra is actually only a superficial meaning, and meant to be used for setting up a preliminary base for understanding its deeper meaning, hence different ways of contemplating and meditating on sound of this mantra.

Shiva is said to have many forms, but his ultimate from (that’s after he gets a form from his formless self), is first that of Ardhanarishwara (Half Male Female God), then masculine part separates as that of Adi-Deva (Primordial God) Sada-Shiva who is Panch-vaktra Shiva (5 Faced Shiva).
..

Every letter in the Panchakshara mantra has significance and a deeper spiritual inference, these can be categorized on various basis as :

Na = Sadyojata faces West.
Ma = Vamadeva faces North.

Shi = Aghora faces South.

Na = Golden hued
Ma = White
Shi = Red,
Va= Black
Ya = Grey in colour

Addition of Om:

When Om.. is Added to these 5 Syllables, it actually becomes a 6 Syllable Mantra. This Om Makes this Divine mantra supremely sublime and further more apt for meditation with breath.

“Om Namah Shivaya”

Yantra for the Mantra:

The Yantra for Shiva Panchakshari Yantra is basically : (A Yantra= Geometrical Energy Representation Diagram = Tool for establishing link with energy+astral body of related spiritual entity)

“An Upward Pointing 5 Point Star”

(Note: Some people may use Shiva Lingam as visual means, or Idol/Picture of Shiva, but most authentic Yantra/Medium is this 5 point Star one)

The 5 Steps of drawing Shiva Yantra’s 5 Point Star are:

1 = Bottom Left to Tip = Sadyojaat

2 = Tip to Bottom Right = Vaam-Deva

3 = Bottom Right to Left = Aghora

4 = Left to Right = Tat-Purush
5 = Right to Bottom Left = Eeshaan

So we start from Bottom Left and again End at Bottom Left,
And then we fill the syllables in Yantra with, “Om” as core energy of Yantra in Center, then Starting from Top Node, in Clockwise Manner we write Na, Ma, Shi, Va, Ya.

The 5 Tips of this figure is like 5 tips of Torso a Human Body Structure

..

The top tip = Forehead
Left Tip = Left Pectoral Girdle (Left Shoulder)
Right Tip = Right Pectoral Girdle (Right Shoulder)
Left Bottom = Left Pelvic (Left Hip)
Right Bottom = Right Pelvic (Right Hip)

..

..

(Entire Theory of Body Syndrome and healing is based on this, and I won’t be explaining that here, but even all that can be dealt with using this single mantra)

.. ..

And then moving from inside to out, the 5 Point Star is followed by a circle, then 8 petal lotus and then 4 directional gates of Temple. As here:

.. ..

….

Now that the base “Theory” is clear, let hop over to the Practical

Practical Application of Mantra:

.

Practical part deals with “how” to practically apply this knowledge to our Spiritual and even Material Growth. (We will primarily cover spiritual one here, that’s for mental stabilizing, the material one require more ritualistic preciseness, which is being avoided here to keep simplicity)

.

Most meditation techniques have to essentially start from any one of the 5 Sense Organs (Gyan Indri) as primary door, and then move into conscious mind, then subconscious and then the silence beneath.

.

This mantra technique actually has many parts, and ritualistic way is the most powerful way to meditate on it, but that will use a few Tantra technical terms which are too elaborate to write here, also too complex to understand for a new comer (if you want that, then just message me)

.

Still if I combine the essential basics of using this mantra, then it includes sitting, breathing, gazing and mental voice control.

.

Sitting at one place is in itself a great Technique… (Earth-Nose)

All the forms of Asan Siddhi (Yogic Postures Mastery) is based on this, to promote proper energy flow in subtle bodies hence stillness in mind through stillness in body. Infact even if not totally still sitting like a statue, if one just sits at a place with less movement, that also helps to great extent.

.

Controlling the movement of Tongue is in itself a great technique … (Water-Tongue-Taste)

All techniques of Khechari Mudra, Conscious eating meditation etc, come under this category. Even The technique of Maun (Silence) come under this category. So controlling tongue by making it mechanical with oral chant or stable with mental chant also helps moving inwards.

.

Constant Staring or even Gazing is in itself a great technique… (Fire-Eyes-Vision)

All the Visual meditation Techniques come under this. And its a fact, whenever a person moves into any sort of trance or meditation, first two physical eyes become stable and then they point more and more to Third Eye as he goes deeper… or in simpler words, if you move to trance you move to third eyes, if you move to third eyes, then you move to trance, its a true statement with double implication sign.

.

Conscious Breathing in itself is a great technique…. (Air-Skin-Feeling)
All the Pranayams, Vipasna Meditation and other forms of Vigyan Bhairav come under this. As they say. Control breath to control mind. The fluency and frequency of ones breath is in direct proportion to calmness and stability of ones mind.

.

Mental Chanting in itself is a great technique… (Sky-Ear-Hearing)
All the mental voice control techniques, mantra chanting and subtle Name chanting come under this. If individual comparison is made amongst ones discussed so far, then of course mental chanting works from most subtle element ‘Sky’ and accounts for highest mental stabilizing, silencing and spiritual growth.

.

And when, stable sitting, tongue stabilizing, constant gazing, conscious breathing and mental chanting are combined, it forms a Supreme Technique

.

That is the technique of chanting Shiva Mantra, encompassing the 5 principles of meditation and emerging as one of the supreme meditative techniques. Most important part here is that it’s done by chanting syllables in this manner:

.

Ommmmmm…. Na-Mah (Inhale)

Shi-va-ya (Exhale)

.

(The Ommm in inhalation can be extended as one desires but exhalation is always slightly Longer than inhalation. Here we have 3 Syllables for Inhalation and other 3 for exhalation)

.

Hence,

.

When you Sit Stable in a Posture
Fix your Eyes on Only One Diagram which brings Specific Energy
Make your breath very slow and deep

Mentally Chant Specific syllables with your mental voice for each inhalation and exhalation

.

Doing this for atleast 10-21 minutes, you come very close to a state of totality in Shiva Consciousness

.

Anyhow, one must not confuse oneself with so many technicalities though… because in reality, while chanting, the supreme importance needs to be given to chanting itself. The stable sitting, gazing on diagram, slow breathing and all this just needs initial setting up and later becomes mechanical… only thing that takes time to become mechanical is mental voice, the mental chanting. One should only give utmost priority and attention to relevant mental voice on inhalation and exhalation.

.

In “Vachik Japa” (Oral Chanting) often the mouth, tongue becomes mechanical… but mind keeps hovering… that’s because a part of conscious and even minor part of subconscious gets under control,

.

While in mental chanting this way, its directly the major share of subconscious mind which becomes mechanical… and since 10% of thoughts come from conscious mind while 90% come from subconscious, so most stop as subconscious gets busy producing only one sound in mind, that of mantra.

.

Hence one experiences mental silence by chanting! Because Mind chants, not you! So the real you are revealed, that’s the essence of Shiva Consciousness.

Still, one must remember, this takes time, practice, and one must concentrate on means rather than end. The chanting is means and state of one sound in mind is the end, one just reaches closer to end gradually. That’s why its called a Sadhna, a spiritual practice, one only improves with practice.

.

Infact why keep things just as theories, one must see+feel it to believe it right? So just to give a sip of what this Ananda Mantra (Bliss Chant) feels like, here is one musical rendering of the Mantra as a Song,

.

Simple Lyrics : “..Om.. Namah Shivaya… Om Namah Shivaya… har har bho-lay Namah Shivay

Amarnath Yatra

July 8, 2011

AMARNATH YATRA Started on 29th June, 2011

The Amarnath Shrine,located in South Kashmir at a height of about 13,000 ft. is dedicated to Lord Shiva . Come July-August and every year the Valley is full of pilgrims from all over the country coming to have a glimpse of Amarnath Mahadev. All the villages around the township of the famous tourist destination,Pahalgam become agog with a lot of activities. After all in these two months they have to earn enough to see them through the next one year.The market at Pahalgam is tastefully decorated in the hope of a booming business. From Pahalgam to the Shrine , rich people arrange free Langars for feeding the devotees.

It is very difficult to trace the correct history of this pilgrimage. Normlly it is believed that this Shrine may be some 5,000 years old. In support of this claim, some Vedic references are also advanced. But they too are not accepted by several historians. However, the first dependable literary evidence is available in Kalhan’s Rajtaran gini of 11th century. Several other references of the Mughal period are also found. Once Emperor Akbar was also given the information about this Shrine by the then governor of Kashmir. On the other hand there is a very popular story prevalent in the local people in this connection according to this ,a shepherd ,in course of grazing his sheep in that locality discovered the self made ice Shivalingam .He rushed back to his village and disclosed to his Hindu co-villagers that their Lord was present in the cave. This story appears true because since that time onward, the family of that Muslim shepherd has been receiving share in the offerings to Amarnath Mahadev .

How to reach Amarnath Shrine ?

Till nearly 25 years back, there was only one route _ Srinagar to the Shrine via Pahalgam. The cave Shrine from Pahalgam is about 40 km away. Important places falling on the road are Chandanbari, Sheshnag, Mahagunnus Top, Poanchtarni and the Cave. The beautiful lake at Sheshn is quite enchanting . It is said that Shiva had unfolded the secrets of life to his consort Parvati in the Amarnath cave. While going to the cave, Shiva had followed this track. He left sandalpaste on his forehead at Chandanbari, the ever present snake around his neck at Sheshnag and other five elemental body at Panchtarni.
The recently opened other route from Srinagar is via Baltal. It is 14 km long from Baltal to the cave.On the way one will come across places like Domali Marg,Sangam and the cavhe itself. From Srinagar, a pilgrim can come to Baltal by car and thus he can leave Srinagar in the morning and after the darshan can return to Srinagar in the same evening.Thus the entire trip may take just about ten hours.In addition to the above routes,a helicopter service has also been launched recently.

Darshan Periods Of Amarnath Shrine :

The most sacred day for the darshan of Amarnath Mahadev js the Shravan Poornima also more popularly known as Raksha Bandhan Divas. In the olden days the Amarnath Yatra,famous by the name of Chhari Mubarak started only some 3-4 days before and concluded on the Shravan Poornima.The Holy Mace (Chhari Mubarak ), accompanied by the sages of different cults and the pilgrims at large in procession started with a great religious fanfare from the Dashnami Akhara,,Srinagar and on the completion of the mission was again carefully preserved there.

The above practice is still being followed with the same pomp and devotion. However it was realized by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board that the growing number of pilgrims could not be accommodated in those counted few days. Moreover, the state Government also had its eyes on the income through tourism. So the Board decided to open the Shrine for about two months from Ashad Poornima to Shravan Poornima. This year it started on July 1 and will last for 55 days. In past this prolonged period created many problems. It is an accepted fact the Shiva devotees offer water on the feet of the Lord. If water is poured on a mass of ice, it is bound to melt. In certain years the ice phallous completely disappeared. The worshipping priests,honouring the sentiments of the devotees brought ice from nearby places, secretly made a lingam and placed it there.Later when there was a disclosure,it resulted into a great uproar all over the country. Under public pressure,the organizers are ensuring today that the self-made Shivalingam,even in a reduced form, continues to bless the faithful.In fact there are two other lingams in the close vicinity,representing Parvati and Ganesha. The Shrine Board ensures that all the three are kept entact.

Dangers on Amarnath Shrines Track

In olden days, the pilgrimage to Amarnth was supposed to be the most difficult.That is why the local people call it “maran-nath” meaning thereby that death was involved in this journey. They also used to say,”all pilgrimages again and again but Amarnath only once”.Since in those days there was no shade on the route,any possible rain or snow-fall brought sure death. Mahagunus Top is the highest point in the route (over 13,000 ft) and around it even today one can see the skeletons of dead horses and donkeys caught in such an inclement weather . Things have improved a lot today. At places there are shades for such eventualities.Food items and medicine are available in abundance.The Booard keeps a very close watch o the Langarwallas so that there was no adulteration.

Hospitality Service In Amarnath Shrine

Normally one will find it difficult to imagine the open-hearted hospitality of the local people, mostly Muslims extended to the pilgrims. They freely give firewood to the naked hermits to warm their body. Other necessities like food, items of worship , cloth etc are also provided willingly. The coolies and pony owners will be seen chanting the name of Baba Amarnath. They provide every possible cooperation to the old and physically weak pilgrims. This wonderful communal harmony is bound to keep alive the faith in Amarnath Mahadev for centuries to come.

Shani Dev

June 28, 2011

Shani Dev

Shani Dev is one of the most popular deities that the Hindus pray to ward off evil and remove obstacles.

Shani literally means the “slow-moving-one”. According to myths, Shani oversees the “dungeons of the human heart and the dangers that lurks there.”

Shani is represented as having a dark complexion and is said to be the son of Surya, the sun god, and Chaya, the servant whom his wife Swarna surrogated. He is the brother of Yama, the god of death and is believed by many to be an avatar of Shiva.

The Lord of Bad Luck?:

Stories about his evil influence abound. Shani is said to have chopped off Ganesha’s head. He is lame and has a limp because his knee was injured when he fought as a child with Yama. In the mythology, he is represented as riding a chariot, carrying a bow and arrow and pulled by a vulture or crow. Shani is found wearing a blue cloth, blue flowers and sapphire.

He is also known as Saura (son of sun-god), Kruradris or Kruralochana (the cruel-eyed), Mandu (dull and slow), Pangu (disabled), Saptarchi (seven-eyed) and Asita (dark).

The Ill-effect of His Planet – Saturn:

Hindus are under fear of evil from his planet – Saturn. In Vedic astrology, the planetary position at the time of birth determines the future of a person. So, Hindus accord immense importance to the planets, and Saturn or Shani is one such planet which they fear the most for ill-luck. Anyone born under his influence is believed to at risk.

How to Appease Shani:

To appease him, many pay obeisance every Saturday by lighting a lamp before the image of Shani and reading the ‘Shani Mahatmyaham’. He is pleased to accept lamps lit with sesame or mustard oil. Even the day named after him, Shanivara or Saturday, is considered inauspicious to begin any new venture.

The Giver of Kindness:

“Yet o son of Chhaya (shadow) you are the fire who can destroy Time itself and like Kamadhenu, the wish giving cow, you grant us all good things with kindness and compassion”, wrote Muthuswami Dikshitar (1775-1835) in his musical ‘Navagraha’ (Nine Planets) composition in Sanskrit.

Shani Temples:

Most Hindu temples have a little shrine set apart for the ‘Navagraha’ or the nine planets where Shani is placed. Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, the oldest Navagraha temple has the most benign Shani. Another important Shani temple is at Shingnapur in Maharashtra where the deity is represented as a block of stone. Navi Mumbai has a Sri Shaniswar temple at Nerul while Delhi has a popular Shanidham at Fatehpur Beri in the historic Mehrauli area.
